We’re Casting for Galatea

We’re casting for a role in our revival of Galatea with Emma Frankland, Andy Kesson and Wildworks in a world premiere commissioned by and as part of Brighton Festival from 5th-21st May. A large-scale, outdoor production, it will take place in Shoreham-by-Sea in West Sussex.

Set in a world where gods walk among the mortals, this unapologetically queer story follows different characters – all lost in the woods. Two young trans people find love whilst escaping oppression; a shipwrecked migrant searches for his family; goddesses clash; parents fret; an alchemist brews magic and a teenage Cupid sets hearts on fire – causing chaos and near disaster. And all the while, time is running out!

Galatea was written in the 1580s by John Lyly, William Shakespeare’s best-selling but now long-forgotten contemporary, inspiring Shakespeare’s comedies from As You Like It to A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Performed in front of Queen Elizabeth I, over four hundred years ago, this tale of love, joy and the importance of welcoming outsiders is an incredibly resonant story for modern times.

We are casting for one of the trans lovers – Phillida. Phillida is a young trans woman (playing age 20s). We’re excited to meet trans and non-binary performers who can see themselves playing this role. 

Galatea will be performed in both English and British Sign Language by our mixed Deaf and hearing cast but we are not requiring performers to speak BSL. The majority of our company are also LGBTQIA+ and/or from the Global Majority and we welcome performers with intersecting identities to join our large, diverse company and have an access and wellbeing package available to support everyone.

Fee: £4,547.12 (£568.39 a week)
Per Diems: £1,733.76 (£30.96 a night)
