New Queers on the Block Weekenders 2020
Over the past 2 years, New Queers on the Block have been presenting some of the UK’s most exciting contemporary theatre and performance makers in across the UK, platforming local and international voices and new approaches to queer art.
This time, we are more daring and expanding wider than ever! Join us across Brighton, Bradford, Blackpool and Hastings for our Weekenders bringing together our commissioned artists alongside a wealth of talent from across the UK and internationally that we are excited about.
The events will be spearheaded by the UK’s ‘leading autistic green Drag Queen’, Oozing Gloop with their vision of the future: The Gloopshow Episode 2: GLOOPTOPIA!. Choreographer and dance artist Marikiscrycrycry premieres their first group piece, an exploration of Tupac and depression in the haunting piece He’s Dead. Both co-commissions are by NQOTB and our partners, providing artists with opportunities to upscale work and experiment with form.
Alongside these two pieces, we are also presenting new commissioned works by Subira Joy and Kirsty Taylor, and programming for the first time artists such as Amrou Al-Kandhi, Jackie Hagan, Mandla Rae, Vijay Patel, Lois Weaver, Nathanial Hall, Dr Duckie, ice&fire and Isma Almas, amongst many others.

Hastings Weekender (TBA)
New Queers on the Block primarily champions and supports migrant, working-class, PoC, disabled and unemployed artists who identify as LGBTQ+. As such, the programmes will be presented in partnership with local LGBTQ+ groups, activists and venue partners who have adapted programming to be more inclusive of experimental work by artists who identify within the broad umbrella that is queer identity.
Throughout the Weekenders and at each venue, NQOTB will be offering quiet areas as well as sober spaces, with gender-neutral facilities and appropriate support to ensure access and consent are at the forefront of everyone’s minds. Each event will have cheap, Pay What You Can and free tickets available, and trust will always be at the forefront of our thinking when presenting these.
