New Queers on the Block film series – Whiskey Chow

“I want to create a space for people, for people from the marginalised position in our queer community, to bring themselves in, being their experience in and to create a hero that they can feel that they are related to. So the hero is not an impenetrable being because of this vulnerability or softness or something that needs to be healed. It adds a more kind of rounded layer to the hero in comparison with the hero that we see in mainstream media.”

London-based visual artist Whiskey Chow works with performance, moving image, installation, print-making and digital. She is one of the New Queers on the Block artists whose work we had the pleasure to commission in 2022 and hers is the third film in our film series celebrating New Queers on the Block continuing into 2024. Here, Whiskey talks about her project regarding the queer fight from a self-defense perspective and co-imagining the Queer Hero.
